CLAREMORE, Okla. -- The Pittsburg State softball team moved to 6-4 on the season with a split at Rogers State on Tuesday (Feb. 25) afternoon. The Gorillas won game one, 9-2, but fell in game two, 6-5, scoring all five runs in the final two innings after starting the game down 4-0.

In the first game, senior Brenna George stole second in the top of the third inning. It was her 60th career stolen base and tied the school record for career stolen bases. The record was originally set by Lisa HIll, who stole 60 bases from 1992-95.

The Gorillas tallied 10 hits in the first game, paced by two hits a piece from Brenna George (2-5), Nicole Nease (2-4) and Jordan Bradshaw (2-3). Bradshaw, Nease and Tiffany Brown each scored two runs, while Kylie Guthier, Alex Perez and Bailey Letts each recorded two RBI. Nease had the lone extra base hit of the game, her second of the season.

Samantha Grove picked up her fourth win of the season, while throwing her second complete game. She gave up two runs on six hits. The Gorillas did commit one errors in the game. Grove struck out three batters and walked five.

In game two, the Gorillas had only two hits and four total base runners going into the sixth inning. The team finished scoring five runs on seven hits and three Rogers State errors.

Brown led the Gorilla offensive charge with a 3-for-4 performance with a home run, a run scored and four RBI. Letts added a 2-for-4 outing with a run scored and an RBI.

Brown pitched 3.1 innings in the loss, as she gave up the last two Rogers State runs. Haleigh Sills started the game and pitched three innings before being relieved by Brown. 

Pitt State scored first in the top of the third inning. Jordan Bradshaw drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Brenna George followed with a base hit, then stole her school record tying 60th base. Both runners came home on a Letts base hit to left center. Brown reached on a fielder's choice as Letts was thrown out at second. Brown stole second before a Nease hit up the middle moved her to third. A Guthier ground out scored Brown to give the Gorillas a three-run edge. Perez added an RBI base hit to score Nease for the 4-0 Pitt State lead.

Two walks and a base hit loaded the bases for Rogers State in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Grove hit a batter to bring home a run and narrow the Gorilla lead to 4-1.

The Gorillas tacked on another four runs in the top of the fourth. Grove started the inning with a base hit up the middle. Devon McCreath came in to pinch run for her. Bradshaw added a base hit through the left side. With one out, Letts drew a walk to load the bases. Another walk to Brown scored McCreath to give the Gorillas a four-run advantage once again. With two outs, Guthier added another bases loaded walk to bring home Bradshaw. Alex Perez reached on a fielder's choice, but no the Hillcats defense was not able to get an out, allowing Letts to score. With the bases still loaded, Mitchell drew another RBI walk for an 8-1 lead.

Three base hits and a fielder's choice led to the Hillcats second run in the bottom of the fifth.

Pitt State regained its seven-run lead with Nease's solo home run in the top of the sixth.

In game two, Rogers State took a 4-0 lead after three innings, scoring one run in the second and three runs in the third.

The Gorillas were not able to score until the top of the sixth. With one out, Letts reached on an error. Brown then stepped up to hit her sixth home run of the season to cut the Rogers State lead to two runs, 4-2.

The Hillcats added another run with four consecutive base hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.

Pitt State tied the game in the top of the seventh. Perez led off the inning with a base hit. Mitchell reached on a fielding error by the Hillcats left fielder. Shelby Stuck came in to pinch run for her. With two outs, a Letts single down the left field line scored Perez. Brown added a base hit up the middle to score two more runs and tie the game 5-5. Brown got all the way to third on a Rogers State error, but she would be held there as the Hillcats made the last out of the inning, leaving the game tied 5-5.

Rogers State lead off batter, Makenzie Kirk was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Kelby Fritz came in to pinch run for her. Fritz advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a bunt single. Jamie Kowalick hit a base hit up the middle to score Fritz for the game-winning run. 

Pitt State will play in the Teri Mathes Zenner Memorial Tournament at Missouri Southern this weekend in Joplin, Mo. The team will play Wayne State on Saturday (March 1) at 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. game with William Jewell. The team will meet former MIAA foe, Truman, at 3 p.m. on Sunday (March 2) and Missouri-St. Louis at 5 p.m.
