Softball Finishes Week With Win

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- It was a cold Saturday (March 1) with a northeast win, but despite the weather, the PItt State Softball team's bats stayed hot as the Gorillas tallied 10 hits on the way to a 5-1 win over Sioux Falls.

Pitt State pitched Sam Grove allowed only two Cougar hits on the day. The Pitt State defense made three errors.

Nicole Nease led the Gorillas with three hits in the game. Tiffany Brown, Brenna George and Cheslyn Mitchell each added two hits. Brown's two hits were a double and a home run ans she scored two runs and tallied two RBI on the game. Mitchell also had two RBI. George scored a run. Bailey Letts had one hit, an RBI double, and scored a run. Kylie Guthier was walked three times in the game and scored a run.

Pitt State got started early with two runs in the top of the first. Brenna George led off with a base hit. She scored immediate on Letts' double. Letts moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Brown's double. Guthier walked and Nease added a base hit to load the bases, but the next three batters went down swining to end the inning.

The Gorillas would not score again until the top of the fifth. Brown led off the inning with a home run to left. Gutheir earned her third walk of the game. She moved to second on a Nease ground out and scored two batters later on a Mitchell RBI base hit to left center for a 4-0 Pitt State lead.

A hit, an error and back-to-back ground outs scored the lone run of the game for Sioux Falls in the bottom of the sixth.

The Gorillas scored their final run in the top of the seventh. Brown drew a lead off walk. With one out, Nease hit a base hit to left to move Brown to second. Brown then stole third and scored with two outs on an RBI base hit by Mitchell for the final 5-1 score.

Grove improved to 6-0 on the season for the Gorillas with the win in the circle.

Pitt State plays a lone doubleheader against Missouri Southern in Joplin next week. The two teams will face off on Saturday, March 8 at 2 and 4 p.m.
