PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State softball team shut out Newman in both games of a doubleheader, winning 9-0 and 8-0, each in five innings, on Tuesday (April 15) afternoon.

The Gorillas tallied 20 hits on the afternoon, while giving up only seven to the visiting Jets.

Brenna George led off game one with a walk. She stole second, then moved to third on a Mitchell base hit. Tiffany Brown's base hit up the middle scored George for the first run of the game. A base hit by McKenzie Rynard and a fielder's choice by Nicole Nease left the bases loaded with one out. Alex Perez hit a double to left center to bring home two more runs and Nease scored on a Kylie Guthier sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.

The team tacked on three more runs in the third. Guthier drove a one-out base hit down the left field line to start the offense. Avery Beard hit the first home run of her career to add two more runs to the Gorilla total. Bradshaw added a base hit and moved two second on a George walk. Mitchell drove a base hit to center to score Bradshaw.

Pitt State was not able to score in the fourth, so had to hit again in the fifth. George drew her third walk of the game and stole second. A two-out home run by Rynard, her 15th of the season, gave the Gorillas the final runs they need to complete the mercy rule win.

Kylie Harpst earned the win in the circle to improve to 9-6 on the year. She walked two batters and struck out five.

The Gorillas scored seven of their eight runs in the first inning of game two. Again George led off the game with a walk. She stole second and scored on a double by Mitchell. Brown added a base hit through the left side. Mitchell came home on an RBI base hit by Rynard. Nicole Nease stepped to the plate and hit her 10th home run of the season to give the Gorillas a 5-0 lead. Nease's home run made her the third Gorilla to hit double figure home runs this season.

With one out, Guthier added a base hit up the middle. Beard added her second home run of the day for the 7-0 Pitt State lead.

The team did not score again until the third when a two base throwing error by the Jets allowed Nease to score from first.

Sam Grove earned the win for game two. She did not give up a walk and struck out four batters. She is now 12-10 on the season.

Pitt State will play its final home games of the season on Wednesday (April 16) at 3 and 5 p.m. against Drury.
