Season StatsBOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State softball team set a new MIAA record for team season home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Southwest Baptist on Friday (April 25) afternoon. The Gorillas won both games by a score of 6-4, the second game in eight innings.
The Gorillas tallied 19 hits on the afternoon, while allowing the Bearcats 17.
Cheslyn Mitchell was the star of game one with a 3-for-3 performance that included two home runs and four RBI. Her second home run was the record setter for the Gorillas.
Mitchell put the Gorillas on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the first.
SBU answered with two runs on three hits and two hit batters.
Pitt State tied the game in the third with a two-out base hit to left field to score Brenna George from second.
The Bearcats took the lead once again in the bottom of the fourth on a hit, three walks and a wild pitch. Haleigh Sill came in to replace PSU starter Kylie Harpst to get the last out in the inning.
The top of the fifth saw Mitchell hit her second home run after George reached on an error, again tying the game.
The Gorillas tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Tiffany Brown reached on a fielder's choice. McKenzie Rynard added a double to put two runners in scoring position for Nicole Nease. Nease knocked a two run base hit to center for the final 6-4 score.
Sills earned the win ti improve her record to 6-6 on the season.
Mitchell was 4-for-5 with three RBI in game two, but Kylie Guthier sealed the win with a game winning two-run home run in the top of the eighth.
Pitt State started the game in the hole as a hit and two errors plated a Bearcat run in the bottom of the first.
The Gorillas would not score until the top of the fourth on a lead off home run by Rynard.
The team broke the tie in the fifth. Avery Beard started the Gorillas with a base hit up the middle. With one out, George reached on a fielder's choice, but an error by the SBU short stop also left Beard safe at second. Mitchell hit a two-RBI double to left for a 3-1 lead.
SBU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on three hits. The game-tying hit was a two-run double with two outs and runners on second and third.
Nease got the Gorillas going in the eighth as she drew a one-out walk. Guthier followed with her game-winning two-run home run. Beard added her second hit of the game with a base hit to center. Jordan Bradshaw drew a one-out walk. George earned an infield base hit to load the bases for Mitchell, who again game through with a base hit for the Gorillas' sixth run.
The Bearcats scored a run on two hits, an error and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, but it was not enough to overcome Pitt State.
Sam Grove pitched the complete game for the Gorillas, striking out five batters and walking one. Only two of the four runs she gave up were earned.
The Gorillas will finish the regular season at Central Missouri on Saturday (April 26) at 1 and 3 p.m.
