WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State softball team (30-24, 12-14 MIAA) needed two wins at Central Missouri on Saturday (Aptil 26) to ensure a spot in the MIAA Tournament. The Gorillas fell just short of their goal, as they split games, 8-3 and 1-9, throwing the team into a four-way tie for the final two spots in the tournament.
Unfortunately the tiebreakers left the Gorillas out of the tournament, along with Washburn, while Lindenwood and Northeastern State got the final two spots.
Things looked good for the Gorillas with an 8-3 win in game one. Pitt State used seven hits and three Jennies errors to scored its eight runs. Central Missouri scored its three runs on seven hits.
Cheslyn Mitchell, Tiffany Brown and McKenzie Rynard each went 2-for-4 for the Gorillas. Mitchell had a double and three RBI. Brown had a home run, a double, two runs and two RBI. Rynard had one RBI.
Pitt State six of its runs in a big second inning. Kylie Guthier reached on an error to lead off the inning. Alex Perez followed as she reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Jordan Bradshaw was hit by a pitch with one out to load the bases. Brenna George reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Guthier to score. A bases clearing double by by Mitchell added three more runs for the Gorillas. Brown and Rynard each followed with RBI doubles for a 6-0 lead. Brown's RBI was her 72nd of the season, setting a new school record for single season RBI.
Central Missouri added two runs in the bottom of the second and one run in the third to cut Pitt State's lead in half.
Brown extended the Gorilla lead with a home run in the fourth, her 27th of the season.
Bradshaw scored the final run of the game in the sixth on a Central Missouri error for an 8-3 win.
Kylie Harpst pitched the first inning before being replaced by Haleigh Sills in the second. Sills improved her record to 7-6 to finish the season.
Pitt State had only five hits in game two, while the Jennies scored nine runs on 10 hits.
George scored the only run of the game, as she scored on a Brown sacrifice hit in the top of the first.
The Jennies scored two runs in the bottom of the second, six in the third and one more in the fourth to earn a 9-1 win in five innings.
Sam Grove pitched three innings, giving up eight hits and eight runs. Sills finished the game, she gave up only two hits and one run.
