The Pittsburg State softball team (17-6, 6-0 MIAA) will take a break from MIAA play this weekend to play in the Missouri Western Apple Market Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. on Friday-Sunday, March 18-20.The 16-team tournament is a conference challenge event featuring teams from the MIAA and the Northern Sun. The games are played at St. Joseph Heritage Park and the Missouri Western Spring Sports Complex.
Pitt State will play six games over the three days. Friday the Gorillas open the tournament against Concordia-St. Paul (6-8) at 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. game against Wayne State (4-10). On Saturday Pitt State plays Augustana (8-8) at noon and Mary (5-9) at 4 p.m. The Gorillas and Sioux Falls (13-5) will face off at 9 a.m. on Sunday before the team concludes the tournament against Northern State (9-9) at 1 p.m.
Pitt State is 17-6 on the season. The team hits .269 and scores an average of five runs a game. The team has a .966 fielding percentage. The Gorilla pitching staff has a 2.51 ERA and is holding its opponents to a .205 batting average.
Sierra Hall leads four Gorillas hitting better than .300 on the season with a .438 average. She has 21 hits in only 17 games, the second most on the team. Katy Remy and Jenna Bolton each hit .346. Remy leads the team in hits with 27 and shares the lead in runs with Ashton Pratt with 17. Remy, Bolton and Nicole Nease share the lead in RBI with 16 each. Pratt leads the team on the base paths with 11 stolen bases in 11 attempts. Catie Cummins leads the team in doubles with seven, while Kylie Guthier is tops in home runs with five.
Emmie Robertson anchors the Pitt State pitching staff with an 11-2 record and a 1.96 ERA. She has thrown four shut outs, including one no hitter. In 85.2 innings she has struck out 112 batters and walked 26. Morgan Myers has a 6-4 record and a 2.65 ERA.                      Â
