Softball Plays Home Opener this Weekend

PITTSBURG -- The Pitt State softball team will bring its 11-5 record home to the Pitt State Softball Complex on Saturday and Sunday (February 25 &26). The Gorillas will play a doubleheader each day against Upper Iowa. Saturday's games will begin at 2 p.m., while Sunday's starts at 11 a.m.

All four games will be broadcast live on KSEK 1340 AM by students from the Pittsburg State Broadcasting Department. Links to the audio via YouTube are available on the right..

Upper Iowa hit .230 as a team in their first outing at the Eight State Classic last weekend. Three players are hitting .300 or higher, including Sammy Garrett, who is .500 from the plate. Tara Walls sports a .368 average and Julia Buffington averages .308, including three RBI's, two doubles, a home run. Shannon Nix also has a homerun under her belt this season. Courtney Clayberg (4.27 ERA) and Emily Kisch (6.30 ERA) threw 11 strikeouts and allowed 42 hits collectively on the weekend. Clayberg recorded the team's only win against Nebraska-Kearney as the team finished with a 1-5 record.

Pitt State finished the Eight State Classic with a 5-1 record. Its only loss was to Rockhurst on Friday. The team earned wins over Concordia, Southern Nazarene, Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota State-Mankato and Wayne State. The Gorillas' overall record is 11-5. 

Pitt State hits .261 as a team. The Gorillas scored about 4.4 runs a game. The team has a 2.33 ERA and holds opponents to a .235 batting average. The Gorillas have a .969 fielding percentage.

Kylie Guthier is the team's leading hitter with a .333 average and is one of three Gorillas hitting .300 or better on the young season. Guthier leads the team in home runs (4), RBI (13) and walks (9). Kala Holder is hitting .327. She has hit three doubles, a triple and a home run on the season. Lawren McKinney adds a .308 average. She leads the team with four doubles and has also hit a triple and a home run. Kaity Kukowski leads the team with 12 runs scored on the season. She has been hit 11 times in the first 16 games. 

Emmie Robertson is the team's top pitcher with a 1.18 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched. In 14 appearances, she has a 7-3 record with two saves. Bree Cornett has a 4-0 record in eight appearances. She has thrown 22.2 inning and struck out 16 batters, while walking only six.
