TOPEKA — The Washburn University baseball team capitalized on four Pittsburg State University errors in taking a 7-4 victory over the Gorillas in the three-game MIAA series opener Friday (Mar. 17).
The Gorillas and Ichabods will resume the series with a 1 p.m. (CDT) game Saturday.
WU (14-7, 6-4 MIAA) broke open a 2-2 game with a five-run fourth inning. The Ichabods scored five runs on just two hits, thanks to a walk, a hit batter and a pair of Pitt State (8-16, 2-8 MIAA) fielding errors.
The Gorillas added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't overcome the five-run deficit.
Dallas Reed belted a solo home run in the top of the first inning for Pitt State. Colton Pogue and Ethan Schleser added two hits apiece.
