Gorillas Pull Away for 9-7 Win Over Ichabods


TOPEKA — The Pittsburg State University baseball team utilized a four-run fifth inning to rally from a 4-3 deficit and eventually defeat Washburn University, 9-7, Saturday (Mar. 18) at Falley Field.

The win helped the Gorillas (9-16, 3-8 MIAA) even the series against the Ichabods (14-8, 6-5 MIAA). The two teams will complete the three-game series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.

Hunter Clanin delivered a two-run double and Ethan Schlesener added a two-run home run in the pivotal fifth inning as Pitt State handed WU starter Lane Barkley (5-1) his first loss of the season.

Cooper Gardner (4-0) allowed just one hit and an unearned run in three innings of relief. Cort Lesmeister nailed down his fourth save of the season by recording the game's final out.

Clanin and Dalls Reed collected three hits apiece to fuel Pitt State's 13-hit attack. Clanin went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Schlesener added a 2-for-4 day with four RBIs.
