RiverHawks Defeat Gorillas, 5-3

PITTSBURG — The Northeastern State University baseball team overcame a 2-0 first inning deficit with a three-run third inning and the visiting RiverHawks held on for a 5-3 win over Pittsburg State University Tuesday (Mar. 21).

NSU improved to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in MIAA play with the win, while Pitt State dropped to 10-17 overall and 4-9 in the MIAA.

Hunter Clanin sparked the Gorillas early with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.

The RiverHawks countered with Dakota Woods' two-run home run punctuating a three-run third inning against Pitt State reliever Tripp Tucker (0-2). NSU added an unearned run in the fifth inning, and, after the Gorillas closed the gap to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the eighth, Jordan Payne added a solo shot in the top of the 9th for the game's final margin.

Colton Pogue went 4-for-5 at the plate to spark Pitt State's 11-hit attack. T.J. Martin also went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the eighth that scored Andrew Vogelbaugh.

The Gorillas will now hit the road for a three-game MIAA series at Edmond, Okla., against the University of Central Oklahoma, Friday through Sunday (Mar. 24-26).
