JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on for a 9-3 victory over Missouri Southern State University Tuesday (Apr. 11) at Warren Turner Field.

The Gorillas (14-22, 8-14 MIAA) scored in each of the first five innings -- a run in the first, two runs in the second, a run apiece in the third and fourth and two more runs in the fifth -- to take control against the Lions (20-19, 12-13 MIAA).

Hunter Clanin delivered an RBI single in the top of the first and Dallas Reed belted a two-run homer in the second for Pitt State. Brett Macary added a run-scoring single in the third and Chase Kilgore singled in another run in the fourth.

Reed drove in a third run with a single in the fifth and Kilgore drew a bases loaded walk to force in another run. Andrew Vogelbaugh hit a two-run homer to cap the Gorillas scoring in the seventh.

Ty Rowe (4-0) limited the Lions to one hit in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Starter Cody Whiting blanked MSSU for four innings before surrendering three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Gorillas will return to action Thursday (Apr 13) when they open a three-game MIAA series against the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
