PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team broke open a 1-1 game with a three-run sixth inning and the Gorillas pulled away late for a 10-2 victory over the Bearcats Monday (Apr. 24).
Pitt State (20-23, 14-15 MIAA), which claimed its eighth win in its last nine games, took the series from SBU (28-14, 18-11 MIAA) with the victory after the two squads split a twinbill Sunday at Al Ortolani Field.
T.J. Martin doubled in Hunter Clanin with the go-ahead run in the sixth. Clanin opened the frame with a single off SBU starter Drew Wagner. Following Martin's hit, the Bearcats intentionally walked Ethan Schlesener before Brett Macary burned the Bearcats with a two-run double.
Pitt State tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning thanks to an SBU error and four Gorilla hits. Vogelbaugh delivered a two-run single in the frame and he added his team-leading 12th home run – a two-run shot – in the eighth inning as well.
Clanin and Martin collected three hits apiece to pace Pitt State's 12-hit attack. Dante Richardson (2-2) allowed just one run in six innings. He scattered four hits and worked around seven walks to earn the victory. Austin Brownell, Cooper Gardner and Cort Lesmeister combined to work the final three innings of relief for the Gorillas.
The Gorillas, who wrapped up their home action for the season, will travel to Joplin, Mo., for a 6 p.m. (CDT) MIAA game against Missouri Southern State University Wednesday (Apr. 26).
