Box Score 2 EMPORIA, KAN. -- The Pitt State softball team dropped a pair of games in the first day of the Six-State Classic in Emporia on Saturday (Feb. 17). The Gorillas lost the first game of the day to Maryville University, 5-4, before falling to # 10 Southern Arkansas, 11-3 (5 innings).
Against Maryville, the Gorillas had nine hits, while allowing nine hits and committing three errors. Maryville had the game winning single in the 8
th inning. Lawren McKinney had a three-run homerun to put the Gorillas on the board in the 3rd. Kaity Kukowski also added three hits and Alicia Lowrey also hit a double.
Bree Cornett started the game in the circle. She pitched five innings and gave up four runs, only two of which were earned. Brooklynne Simbeck threw two 2/3 innings. Simbeck gave up the final run, to make her record now (3-3).
Pitt State managed only four hits against Southern Arkansas. Kala Holder went 2-for-3, with three RBI's and two homeruns. Southern Arkansas scored eleven runs on thirteen hits and two Gorilla errors.
Bree Cornett threw 4.0 innings to take the loss. She gave up nine hits. She struck out two and walked three. Simbeck finished the game.
Pitt State will return to action Sunday (Feb. 18) to take on Henderson State at 9 a.m. followed by Arkansas Tech at 11 a.m. to finish tournament play at the 6-State Classic in Emporia, Kan.
