Gorillas Head to Florida for Weekend Action


PITTSBURG — The Pitt State softball team will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to play doubleheaders on three consecutive days Friday through Sunday (Feb. 9-11). Games will be played at AD Griffin Sports Complex at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Buccaneer Softball Field at Miami Shores, Fla.

On Friday, Pitt State will play a twinbill against Lynn University at 11 a.m. (CST), while the Gorillas will face Nova Southeastern University in a doubleheader beginning at Noon Saturday. Pitt State will wrap up the southern trip with a twinbill against Barry University at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Pitt State opened the season with a 3-3 record at the Southeastern Oklahoma Invitational at Durant, Okla. The Gorillas enter this week's action on a three-game winning streak after opening the season 0-3.

Five Pitt State players are hitting .300 or better on the season. Kaity Kukowski leads the group with a .353 average. She leads the team in runs scored (4), slugging percentage (.765) and on-base percentage (.450). Kala Holder is hitting .316 and leads the team with four RBIs.

On the mound, Brooklynne Simbeck leads the squad with a 2-1 record and a 1.35 ERA.

As a team, the Gorillas have a .268 batting average and a 2.17 ERA. Pitt State is scoring 2.3 runs per game.

Lynn is 3-1 on the season. The Fighting Knights are hitting .270 as a team and have a 2.11 ERA. Nova Southeastern is 2-4 after opening last weekend at the DII Gulf Shores Invitational. The Sharks hit .227 and bring a 2.67 ERA into this week's action. Barry also opened up at the Gulf Shore Invite and posted a 1-5 mark. The Buccaneers hit. 289 but came away from the tournament with a 6.23 team ERA.
