Gorillas to Host Lions, Blue Tigers in MIAA Weekend Action


PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University softball team will wrap up its home schedule for the 2018 season this weekend with a pair of home doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 14-15). The Gorillas will host MIAA rival Lindenwood University in a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. and Pitt State will entertain Lincoln University the next day in a 1 p.m. twinbill.

The Gorillas will honor outgoing seniors Bree Cornett, Lawren McKinney, Shelby Miller and Brooklynne Simbeck between games.

Pitt State is 18-27 overall and 8-8 in MIAA in MIAA play. The Gorillas are currently seventh in the conference standings after splitting a doubleheader against Southwest Baptist University Tuesday (Apr. 10). Lindenwood is 18-19 overall and 7-11 in the MIAA heading into Saturday's match-up, while Lincoln is 5-33 overall and 0-18 in the MIAA heading into a Saturday road game against Missouri Southern State University.
 
Pitt State is hitting .254 as a team and scoring 3.8 runs per game. Sophomore Kala Holder leads the team with a .339 batting average. Holder has scored a team-leading 28 runs and hit a team-high 12 home runs. Senior Lawren McKinney also is hitting .233 with nine home runs and a team-leading 29 RBIs.
 
Pitt State pitchers have a 4.83 ERA as a group. Senior Bree Cornett is 7-13 with a 4.63 ERA in 37 appearances (20 starts), while senior Brooklynne Simbeck is 10-14 with a 5.57 ERA in 34 appearances (25 starts).
