Gorillas Outlast Lopers in Slugfest, 16-13

KEARNEY, Neb. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team salvaged the final game of a three-game series with a 16-13 extra-inning victory over the University of Nebraska-Kearney Sunday (Apr. 29).

The Gorillas (29-16, 21-12 MIAA) fell behind, 10-5, before using a six-run eighth inning to take a 12-10 lead against the Lopers (27-20, 20-13 MIAA). UNK rallied with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to erase a 13-10 deficit and force extra innings, but Pitt State countered with three runs in its half of the 11th to escape with the win.

The Gorillas belted six home runs on a wind swept day at Memorial Field. Joven Afenir went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs. Reece Garvie, Josh Whisler, Cody White and Tyson Cushman all homered as well. Whisler collected four of the Gorillas 19 hits in the contest. White doubled, homered and drove in four runs.  Cushman went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

White (2-0) pitched the final four innings of relief to earn the victory on the mound. He surrendered the three runs to UNK in the bottom of the ninth but kept the Lopers at bay the rest of the way, registering six strikeouts.
