Gorillas Head to Emporia for Weekend Tournament

PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University softball team will travel to Emporia, Kan., to take part in the Emporia State University Softball Classic Thursday through Saturday (Mar. 21-23) at the Trusler Sports Complex.

The tournament moved locations earlier this week when action scheduled for St. Joseph, Mo., was canceled due to the regional rains and flooding in that area. To salvage the weekend, ESU officials agreed to host a condensed version of the tournament.

Pitt State's weekend schedule is as follows:
Thursday, Mar. 21 • 9 a.m. • vs. St. Cloud • Turnbull Field
Thursday, Mar. 21 • 11:30 a.m. • vs. Upper Iowa • Turnbull Field
Friday, Mar. 22  • 10 a.m. • vs. MSU-Mankato • Turnbull Field
Friday, Mar. 22  • 3 p.m. • vs. Sioux Falls • Thomas Field
Saturday, Mar. 23  • 10 a.m. • vs. Concordia St. Paul • Turnbull Field
Saturday, Mar. 23 • 12:30 a.m. • vs. Wayne State • Canon Field

Pitt State is 14-13 overall (4-2 MIAA) on the season. The Gorillas posted a 5-3 record last week, splitting an MIAA doubleheader against Fort Hays State University in their most recent action Monday (Mar. 18) at Hays, Kan.

Pitt State is hitting .282 as a team and scoring 5.6 runs per game. Junior Kala Holder leads the team with a .405 batting average. Holder has scored 24 runs, hit a team-best six home runs and driven in 14 runs. Junior Kaity Kukowski also is hitting .356 with a team-leading seven home runs and 19 RBIs.

Pitt State pitchers have a 4.28 ERA as a group. Junior Halle Brin is 8-5 with a 2.93 ERA in 21 appearances (13 starts), while freshman Shelby Smith is 6-6 with a 4.82 ERA in 19 appearances (13 starts).
