PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University softball team will travel to Wichita, Kan., Saturday for an MIAA doubleheader against Newman University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the NU Softball Field.
The Gorillas enter Saturday's action riding a modest two-game winning streak after Pitt State swept a home twinbill with MIAA rival Emporia State University the last time out Tuesday (Mar. 16). The wins helped the Gorillas improve to 6-10 on the young season and 2-0 in conference play. Newman is 3-14 on the year (1-5 MIAA).
Pitt State defeated ESU by scores of 5-0 and 6-3 Tuesday. Senior pitcher Kaylee Burns claimed victories in both halves of the twinbill to improve to 3-4 on the season. She allowed just two combined hits in 12.0 innings in the circle, striking out 12 batters overall.
At the plate the Gorillas are batting .256 on the season. Against the Lady Hornets the Gorillas put up 19 hits led by sophomore catcher Audrey Miller who had five hits including a double and a long ball in the doubleheader.
Left Fielder Kylee Bohle and first baseman Kami Zimmerman both hit their first home runs of the season against ESU. Right fielder Paxtyn Hayes notched her second long ball of the season against the Lady Hornets; and pitcher Lauren Florez came into pinch hit for the Gorillas and smacked a home run into the trees in centerfield.
The Jets dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Northeastern State University (7-1 & 9-4) in their most recent action.
Following the games against Newman, Pitt State will return home for a make-up doubleheader against Washburn University at Noon Sunday (Mar. 21).
