Gorillas fly by Jets

Wichita Kan. – The Pittsburg State University softball team flew by the Newman Jets in doubleheader action Saturday. Game one was a final score of 4-2. Game two was 23-16.

Game one started out slow for the Gorillas with its first hit coming in the third by Taylor Lambert. Kukowski started off from there and scored a solo shot in the fourth to put the Gorillas up 1-0. Left fielder Paxtyn Hayes smacked a double to score Bohle and Lambert in the fifth. An error by the Jets allowed Hayes to make her way home and plate the final run of the game, 4-2.

Senior pitcher Kaylee Burns was credited with the win for game one. Burns went all seven innings giving up five hits and striking out two along the way. The win improves Burns to a 4-4 record this season.

The high flying action of Pitt State's game two victory started off with a Kaity Kukowski hit by pitch that scored Kylee Bohle from third. The Gorillas never looked back. Keelah Griffith plated two with a double to center field. The top of the first end with a score of 4-0. The Jets scored four in the bottom to tie the game.

The Gorillas quickly answered with three runs in the top of the second. Two coming off of a Audrey Miller home run to right field. The Gorillas got back at it again in the third plating three more runs to go up 10-5. Bohle, Kukowski, Lambert all notched an RBI in the fourth to put the Gorillas up 15-5. 

Pitt State tacked on seven insurance runs in the top of the sixth. The Jets put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the game its final score fo 23-16.

Freshman Lauren Florez was credited with the game two win. Florez went two and 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs. Florez moved to 2-0 on the season.

The Gorillas are back Sunday Mar. 21 to take on Washburn. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
