Gorillas Drop Pair in Home Opening Action Saturday

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University softball team dropped a pair of games in the Gorillas home opening action of the season Saturday (Mar. 6) at the PSU Softball Complex. The Gorillas dropped an 8-3 decision to the University of Minnesota Duluth and a 7-4 decision to Rockhurst University.

Pitt State (3-7) will face both Rockhurst and UMD again in day two action of the Pitt State Classic Sunday (Mar. 7) with the Gorillas battling the Hawks at 3 p.m. and the Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m.

In game one Saturday, UMD broke open a 4-3 game with a run in the fourth inning and three more insurance runs in the fifth frame to claim the victory.

Kylee Bohle, Paxtyn Hayes and Kami Zimmerman all had two hits apiece for the Gorillas. Kaity Kukowski also went 1-for-3 and delivered a two-run home run in Pitt State's half of the third inning. Kaylee Burnes (0-3) took the loss in the circle for the Gorillas.

Against Rockhurst, Lexie Storrer held Pitt State hitless through four innings and the Hawks built a 7-0 lead before the Gorillas' Keelah Griffith and Kori Stonestreet each belted two-run home runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to narrow the game's final margin. Madison Morris (0-2) was charged with the loss for the Gorillas.
