Pitt State to Head to Topeka for WU Invitational



PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University softball team will travel to Topeka to compete in the Washburn University Invitational Saturday through Monday (Feb. 26-28). The tournament originally was scheduled to start Friday (Feb. 25), but inclement weather pushed back the start date by a day.
 
The Gorillas will play five games over three days starting with Saturday match-ups against the University of Sioux Falls (10:30 a.m.) and Southwest Minnesota State University (12:30 p.m.).
 
On Sunday, Pitt State will take on St. Cloud State University at 9:30 a.m. and Wayne State College at 11:30 a.m. The Gorillas will close out the three-day action with a Noon game Monday against the University of Minnesota Crookston.
 
Pitt State will bring a 7-3 record into the weekend action. The Gorillas posted a 2-2 record last weekend playing a pair of split doubleheaders against Winona State University and Drury University.
 
Through 10 games played, the Pitt State offense is hitting .364 as a team. The Gorillas have belted 18 home runs and scored 93 runs (9.3 pg). Pitt State has been aggressive on the base paths as well with 16 stolen bases to date. The Gorillas pitchers currently sport a 5.08 ERA.
 
Junior utility player Taylor Lambert leads the squad with a .514 batting average. She has a team-leading 18 hits and has scored 10 runs. Junior catcher Madison Szymanski is hitting .500 with 10 runs scored and 12 RBIs, while redshirt junior outfielder Keelah Griffith is hitting .433 with two home runs and eight RBIs. Sophomore utility player Paxtyn Hayes is batting .300 with four doubles, three HRs and 12 RBIs.
 
Senior pitcher Abby Atkin is 4-1 with a 4.38 ERA on the season, while senior Taylor Compton is 1-0 with a 3.82 ERA and sophomore Hannah Harrison is 2-2 with a 5.07 ERA to date.
