PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University men's and women's outdoor track & field teams turned in a string of impressive performances in their home debut in the 14th Annual David Suenram Gorilla Classic Saturday (Apr. 9) at Prentice Gudgen Track.
The men's action was highlighted by a school record breaking performance by the 4x100m relay. Tevin Wright-Rose, Louis Rollins, LJ Kiner and Braylen Brewer won the race in a fast time of 40.12 seconds, besting the previous Pitt State record of 40.21 set in 2006.
Other event winners included Nizar Alarahshun in the 400 meters (48.16), Connar Southard in the 800 meters (1:52.45), Kiner in the long jump (24-10.5, PQ), Konner Swenson in the shot put (56.8.75, PQ) and Caleb Calvin in the javelin throw (212-8, PQ). Sam Tudor placed second in the 400m (48.20), while T.J. Caldwell (110m hurdles, 14.16, PQ), Riley Hedges (steeplechase, 10:29.65), Bryce Kaufmann (5,000m, 15:18.71) and the 4x400m relay of Matthew Morris, Matt Wilson, Monte Goen-Gutierrez and Southard (3:17.81) also placed second in their respective events.
In the women's action, Christine Williams posted the second-fastest time in the 200m in school history (23.76), Madison Burt won the 400m hurdles (1:01.34) with the fourth-fastest time in school history and Erica Schamel won the high jump (5-8) with the fifth-best clearance in Pitt State history. Marissa Dick also won the steeplechase (11:45.04) and Madison Reese won the javelin throw with a PR toss of 151 feet, 11 inches.
Kate Dawson posted the second-fastest time in school history with her second-place finish in the women's 1,500 meters (4:31.10, PQ), while Blakelee Winn placed second in the long jump (19-3.5, PQ) and Auna Childress finished second in the triple jump (39-8, PQ). Erin Hammeke also placed second in the steeplechase (12:05.17).
