Gorillas Fly By Jets, 92-43, in Home Opener

PITTSBURG -- Karenna Gerber and Grace Pyle posted double-doubles in the long-awaited home opener as the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team flew past Newman University, 92-43, Thursday (Dec. 7) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.

After starting the season with seven games away from home, Pitt State (7-1, 2-1 MIAA) wasted little time in taking control against the visiting Jets (1-8, 0-3 MIAA). The Gorillas jumped out to a 21-9 first quarter advantage before expanding the margin to 20 points, 42-22, at the intermission. The Gorillas limited NU to 13 or less points in all four periods.

Gerber led all scorers with 22 points on nine of 14 shooting from the field. She added 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in the contest. Pyle chipped in with 17 points and a game high 11 boards. Alba Lozano Davila and Macie Mays also finished in double figures with 10 points apiece.

Carissa Beck paced the Jets with 12 points, while Dani Williams added eight points. NU shot just 24.3 percent from the field in the game, making 17 of 70 shots overall.

Pitt State will return to action Saturday (Dec. 9) by hosting the University of Central Oklahoma at 1 p.m. (CST).
