Winn, Flanagan Strong in Season Debuts

PITTSBURG — Mattie Flanagan turned in a personal best in her 2023 season debut and Blakelee Winn just missed her PR as well in the women's pentathlon at the Boo Rogers Combined Events Friday (Dec. 8) at the Robert W. Plaster Center. Winn compiled 3,831 points between the five disciplines – 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meters – to place second overall. She surpassed the NCAA qualifying standard and finished the multi's just 42 points offer her all-time best (3873 pts.). Winn placed second in both the 60m hurdles (8.59) and the shot put (12.40m). Flanagan placed third with a new all-time best mark of 3,826 points. She also provisionally qualified to nationals on the strength of her first place finish in the high jump (1.69m) and third-place effort in the long jump (5.82m). Angelo State University's Maricia Spence won the competition with a score of 4,112 points. In the men's heptathlon competition, Pitt State's Hunter Jones exited day one action in first place with 3,199 points and Doug Brown wrapped up Friday's action in seventh place with 2,929 points. Jones won the high jump competition, clearing 2.09m.   The men's heptathlon resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday. The Crimson & Gold Invitational, which will feature more than 44 teams and over 1,400 athletes, begins at 10:30 a.m.
