Gorillas Start Fast in MIAA Championships

PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State University multi-event athletes got the Gorillas women's and men's indoor track & field teams off to solid starts to the 2023 MIAA Indoor Championships Friday (Feb. 24).
 
Sophomores Blakelee Winn and Matti Flanagan placed second and fifth, respectively, in the women's pentathlon to secure 12 points for the Gorillas, while redshirt freshman Doug Brown exited day one action in the men's heptathlon in second place overall.
 
Winn scored 3,820 in the pentathlon to finish as the MIAA runner-up behind Central Missouri's Kayla Goodwin, who scored 3,943 points in the five disciplines. Winn placed first overall among the 14 competitors in the 60-meter hurdles (8.57) and the shot put (42.0.5). Her time in the hurdles was fifth-fastest in school history. Flanagan placed second in the high jump (5-4.25) and third in the long jump (18-3.75).
 
Brown compiled 2,948 points through four events in the heptathlon to sit in second place behind Fort Hays State's Nolan Churchman (3,013 points). Brown finished second in both the long jump (22-8.5) and high jump (6-4.25) disciplines to move into contention for an MIAA title Saturday.
 
The heptathlon resumes at 11:30 a.m. Saturday while the full meet swings into gear starting at 2 p.m.
