Tinch Leads Pitt State Squads at WU Open Saturday

TOPEKA — Sophomore hurdler/jumper Cordell Tinch made a big splash in his Pittsburg State University debut Saturday (Feb. 4) competing at the Washburn University Open.

Tinch, who transferred to Pitt State in January from Coffeyville Community College, posted the top mark in NCAA Division II this season in both the 60-meter hurdles and the long jump Saturday.

Tinch won the 60m hurdles in a lightning quick 7.66 seconds, besting his Gorilla teammates T.J. Caldwell (7.74) and Daylin Williams (7.77) who previously set the top two marks in the country at the Wendy's/PSU Invitational on Jan. 28.

He followed that up by winning the long jump Saturday with a nation's best mark of 26 feet, 0.75 inches – nearly seven inches further than his closet competitor.

Both marks set new Pitt State indoor records as well.

In other notable men's action at the WU Open, Antoine Evans Jr. won the men's 60 meters. He clocked a fast time of 6.72 Saturday. In the 400 meters, Braylen Brewer (47.61), Corey Lyons (47.96) and Sam Tudor (48.02) finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Lyons posted the fifth-fastest time in school history. Brewer already holds the top school mark at 46.33 from a year ago.

The men's 4x400m relay of Nizar Alarahshun, Lyons, L.J. Kiner and Brewer posted a winning time of 3:13.00. Kiner also placed second in the long jump (24-11.25).

Konner Swenson and Cole Sample both picked up NCAA qualifying marks in the men's shot put. Swenson placed fifth overall (55-4.75), while Sample finished sixth (54-7.5).

Doug Brown started the day by placing third in the men's heptathlon. He posted a personal best score of 5,137 points in the seven discipline multi-events – the sixth-best mark in school history.

In the women's action, Auna Childress won the long jump with a personal best mark of 19-2 (6th best in school history). Madelyn Marquez also posted the fastest time of the day in the 60 meter hurdles (8.70, PQ). The 4x400m relay of Kinleigh Hall, Taniya Looney, Olivia Lowrey and Jamiya Morgan also posted a winning time of 3:51.00.
