PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State University women's basketball coach Amanda Davied announced today (Apr. 19) that Macie Mays has signed a national letter of intent to join the Gorillas for the 2023-24 season.
Mays, a senior at El Dorado Springs (Mo.) High School, becomes the fifth player to commit to Pitt State for the 2023-24 season. She joins high school teammates April Edwards and Ja'miya Brown from North Little Rock (Ark.) High School, Destiny Buerge of Carl Junction (Mo.) High School and Hannah Miller of the DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla., to commit to Pitt State.
Mays, a 5-10 guard, was named the 2022-23 Missouri Class 3A Player of the Year. She averaged 25.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game while helping the Bulldogs to a 26-6 overall record. A two-time Class 3A All-State performer, Mays helped guide EDS to a 29-3 record and the Class 3A state championship in 2021-22. She finished her prep career as a four-time first-team All-Conference and All-District performer.
"Our staff is very excited about Macie Mays," Davied said. "Coach Pat (Schrater) found her a little later in the recruiting process, but thank goodness we found her! She is already a pretty impressive basketball player, as you can tell, by not only her individual accolades, but also her team accomplishments; and we believe her best basketball is in front of her.
"She's a team-first player and a winner. Combine that with her blue-collar work ethic and competitiveness, and that's our type of kid.
"Macie's high school coach, Beau Swopes, and his staff run such a successful program and have a similar offensive and defensive philosophy. This made it easy to evaluate her and should help her transition into our program."
