AUSTIN, Texas — Three Pittsburg State University student-athletes – Auna Childress, Kyla Davis and Matthew Oglesby – have earned 2022-23 Academic All-America® honors for women's and men's cross country/track & field today (June 28).
Childress was selected to the first-team Academic All-America® squad for women's cross country/track & field, while Davis was tabbed to the second-team squad as voted by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). Oglesby was a third-team Academic All-America® selection for men's cross country/track & field.
Childress (Lawrence, Kan.) has a 3.81 GPA as a nursing major. She swept the women's triple jump event in the 2022-23 academic year, capturing the individual national title at the 2023 NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor National Championships. Childress now owns the Division II record in the women's triple jump with a mark of 13.37 meters (43-10½), which she set at outdoor nationals. Earlier in the season, she also bounded a wind-aided 13.47 meters (44-2½) for the third-furthest all-conditions mark in NCAA Division II history.
Childress also was crowned a two-time MIAA champion in 2023, winning the triple jump at both the MIAA's indoor and outdoor championships. She also earned All-MIAA honors with a third-place finish in the long jump at both the indoor and outdoor championships. Childress was selected the 2022-23 MIAA Ken B. Jones Award winner as the conference's female student-athlete of the year.
Davis (Yukon, Okla.) has a 3.89 GPA as an interior design major. She captured the D2 national championship in the pole vault with a winning clearance of 13-9.25. Davis also captured MIAA crowns in the discipline in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. She also captured the national championship in the pole vault during the 2022 indoor season.
Oglesby (Galena, Kan.) has a 3.87 GPA as a management major. He earned NCAA Division II All-America honors during the 2022 cross country season while leading the Gorillas to an NCAA-II National Championships berth. Oglesby also garnered All-MIAA honors in track & field and set the school record in the 10,000 meters (29:37.17) in April. He was a 2021-22 CSC Academic All-America® honoree as well. Oglesby was selected a finalist for the 2022-23 MIAA Ken B. Jones Award as the conference's male student-athlete of the year.
Pittsburg State wrapped up the 2022-23 academic year with seven CSC Academic All-America® honorees. The Gorillas ranked third among MIAA schools in Academic All-America® recipients for 2022-23, trailing only Fort Hays State University (10) and Northwest Missouri State University (8).
Pitt State has compiled 152 all-time Academic All-America® honors among its student-athletes, including 64 cross country/track & field honorees (37 women, 27 men).
