KEARNEY, Neb. — Quarterback
Chad Dodson Jr. passed for 247 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to wide receiver
Kuron Parchmon and the Pittsburg State University defense turned in a dominant performance in a 20-10 road win over the University of Nebraska-Kearney Saturday (Oct. 12).
The No. 7 ranked Gorillas improved to 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in MIAA play with the victory, while the Lopers dropped to 3-3 (1-3 MIAA).
Pitt State scored the game's first 10 points on a 39-yard field goal by
Austin Schmitt midway through the first quarter and Dodson's five-yard scoring connection to Parchmon early in the second quarter.
UNK trimmed the margin to 10-7 on Reagan Jones' four-yard touchdown pass to Tuni Fifita, but Schmitt countered with a 22-yard field goal with 1:46 to play in the second quarter to send the Gorillas to the intermission with a 13-7 advantage.
Trey Prichard booted a 28-yard field goal for the Lopers to make it a 13-10 game with 5:29 remaining in the third. Dodson countered with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Parchmon with 53 seconds left in the third period, one play after
Ryan Medeiros broke off a 26-yard punt return to set up the Pitt State offense in UNK territory.
Neither team scored in the final period. The Gorillas offense held the ball for the final 8:47 to seal the 10-point win.
Defensively, Pitt State limited UNK to 138 yards of total offense including just 34 net rushing yards on 24 carries. The Gorillas registered four quarterback sacks and six total stops behind the line of scrimmage in the contest.
Linebacker
Thomas Cook posted a team-leading six tackles with 1.5 QB sacks. Safety
Jordan Rogers also made two tackles and an interception on the afternoon.
Dodson completed 26 of 45 passes. Parchmon had six grabs for a team-leading 75 yards, while wide receiver
Christian Carter added eight receptions for 49 yards. Running back
Noah Hernandez carried the ball 19 times for 57 yards.
The Gorillas will return home to face MIAA rival Fort Hays State University next Saturday (Oct. 19) at 2 p.m. (CDT) for Pitt State's Homecoming game.
