CONROE, Texas - The Pittsburg State softball program completed the DII First Pitch Invitational unblemished following wins against Saint Martin's and St. Edward's at the Scrapyard Iron Fields (Feb. 4).
Pittsburg State (6-0) claimed an 11-4 victory over Saint Martin's (3-2) and 9-1 in five innings against St. Edward's (1-4).
Against SMU the Gorillas finished with Heather Arnett, Courtney Storey, Maddie Fernandez, Sophia Driver and Gabby Schultz each contributing two RBIs as Fernandez hit her first home run of the season. Bree Sexton struck out six in four shutout innings for the win while Hannah Martin and Kiana Pogroszewski combined for the final three innings in the circle.
To conclude the tournament, Ava Laurent pitched a five-inning complete game striking out five for her second win of the season. Hannah Burnett finished with two runs scored, two RBIs, a triple, double and a stolen base to lead the offense.
For the fourth time in program history and first since 1991 the Gorillas have begun the season 6-0 and were the only unbeaten team to leave the DII First Pitch Invitational this season.
Up next is the UCO/OC Classic in Edmond, Okla. (Feb. 9-10) with four games scheduled split between the days at the host institutions.
