PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University women's 400m relay shattered a school record and Gorilla athletes post a score of NCAA qualifying marks at the 16th Annual David Suenram Gorilla Classic Saturday (Apr. 6).
The Pitt State women, the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA Division II, registered four individual event wins at Prentice Gudgen Track, highlighted by the blazing fast time of 44.69 seconds in the 400m relay by Blakelee Winn, Taniya Looney, Jamiya Morgan and Diandrenique Gaines.
Gaines added a winning time of 11.32 seconds (PQ) in the 100 meters; the 4x400m relay of Kinleigh Hall, Mikah Edwards, Maddie O'Neill and Yasmine Johnson claimed victory in 3:47.09 (PQ); and Taylor Nelloms won the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 8 inches (PQ).
Haleigh Hadley and Allary Liberatore also cleared 5-8 in the high jump to finishe second and third, respectively, while Rachel Wilson placed fourth at 5-7 (PQ). Isabelle Peters placed second in the pole vault (13-7.75, PQ) and Nelloms added a second-place finish in the long jump (19-9.5, PQ). Makayla Pavelka also placed second in the triple jump (38-7).
Abby Lasiter finished second in the hammer throw (180-5, PQ) and fourth in the shot put (45-3); Siby Yao placed third in the long jump (19-8.25, PQ); Morgan finished third in the 200 meters (24.05, PQ); and Amber Walbeck placed fourth in the javelin (142-7, PQ).
Looney clocked a PQ time of 11.45 in the prelims of the 100m. She placed second in the finals in 11.54.
In the men's action, Joel Nyatusah clocked the third fastest time in school history in winning the 110m hurdles in 13.47 (PQ). Caleb Calvin also won the javelin in 239-0 (PQ).
The 400m relay (Xavier Carmichael, Dakari Charlton, Dapriest Hogans, Dre'shaun Sanders) won in 40.28 (PQ); and the 4x400m relay (Woyn Chatman, Bailey Stone, Caden Williams, Sam Tudor) raced to victory in 3:08.34 (PQ).
Charlton placed second in the 100 meters in 10.22 (PQ). Hogans clocked a fast time of 10.21 (PQ) in the prelims of the event. Daylin Williams also posted a PQ time of 13.78 in the prelims of the 110m hurdles.
Nate Watson added a third-place time of 48.07 (PQ) in the 400 meters, while Grayson Smith finished fourth in the pole vault (16-7.25, PQ). Jack Haukap placed third in the hammer throw (196-6, PQ); Cole Sample finished fourth in the shot put (56-3.5, PQ); and Brennan Boord placed fourth in the discus throw (175-1, PQ).
