Gomez Resigns Pitt State Volleyball Position

PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State University Vice President of Athletics & Recreation Jim Johnson announced today (Mar. 11) that Jen Gomez has resigned her position as head volleyball coach after being hired as Athletics & Activities Director at Pittsburg High School.

Gomez recently completed her ninth year as head volleyball coach at Pittsburg State University during the 2024 campaign. She compiled 304 career victories in 19 years as a collegiate head coach, including 102 wins leading the Gorillas program.

Johnson indicated the school will expedite a search to hire a new head volleyball coach. And that appointment will be made as soon as possible.

"I want to thank Coach Gomez for her decade of service to Pittsburg State University and the Gorillas volleyball program," Johnson said. "Jen has been instrumental in the growth of our program and we are excited for the future of Pitt State Volleyball. We wish Jen, and her family, the best with this new opportunity at PHS and know she'll still be following the Gorillas from close by and will be Gorilla volleyball's biggest fan."

Gomez recorded her 300th career coaching victory on Sept. 27, 2024, in Pitt State's MIAA opening victory over the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Her 100th win at Pitt State came two weeks later in a 3-1 home decision over the University of Central Missouri on Oct. 11, 2024.

Gomez came to Pittsburg State in December 2015 after serving five seasons as head coach at NCAA Division II member Colorado State University-Pueblo. She also averaged 26.8 wins per year in five seasons as head coach at NAIA member Oklahoma City University from 2006-10 while restarting a program that had been dormant on that campus since 1983.

"I am so grateful to Jim Johnson, the administration, and Pitt State for the opportunity to lead Gorilla Volleyball for the past nine seasons. While I am very excited to embark on a new journey that will allow me to be more present with my own family, I am confident that the PSU Volleyball program and players will be in great hands. I'm looking forward to following and supporting the program in the future. A special thank you to all the fans and players, both past and present, who have supported us and given their all for PSU Volleyball. Pitt State holds a special place in the hearts of the Gomez family, and we will forever be GORILLA FANS!"

During her tenure at Pittsburg State, Gomez helped guide the Gorillas to four MIAA Postseason Tournament berths, including an appearance in the semifinals of the 2022 MIAA Postseason Tournament. Pitt State logged 18 victories during the 2018 season – the program's highest win total since 2009 – as well as 17 wins in 2022.

Her squads made three trips to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Postseason Tournament during her tenure at CSU-Pueblo. At OCU, her 2007 team posted a 34-10 record and her 2008 squad enjoyed a 33-8 campaign.

Prior to her first head coaching position at OCU, Gomez served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, CSU-Pueblo (then University of Southern Colorado), from 2000-03 and at Angelo State University, from 2004-05, growing in the profession under a pair of legendary coaches in Tom Shoji and Kathleen Brasfield.

A native of Dodge City, Kan., Gomez was an NJCAA All-America player at Garden City Community College, as well as an NJCAA Scholar Athlete. She also earned All-RMAC honors and was voted to the RMAC All-Tournament team her senior season at CSU-Pueblo.

Gomez is married to Chanc Gomez. Jen and Chanc have four children: daughter Micah, 14, son, Ryder, 10, and twin sons, Kash and Colt, who are six.
