WINGATE, N.C. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) has selected Pittsburg State University junior infielder
Landin Midgett has been named the Central Region Hitter of the Week; and the Gorillas have climbed 10 spots to No. 6 in this week's NCBWA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll Wednesday (Feb. 11).
Midget, who was named the MIAA Hitter of the Week Monday (Feb. 10), hit .583 with four extra-base hits and drove in 16 runs to lead Pitt State to a 4-0 record at the Edmond First Pitch Classic, Feb. 5-8. The Columbus, Kan., native went 4-for-4 with a double, a grand slam and seven RBI in the Gorillas 25-1 over UMSL Thursday. He also went 2-for-3 with a double and five RBI in a 19-0 win vs. ECU Saturday; and he capped the weekend with three more RBI in an 18-1 victory against SEOSU Sunday.
For the week, Midgett slugged 1.083 and had a .600 on-base percentage. He's hitting .474 with an MIAA-leading 21 RBI through seven games played.
The Gorillas, ranked No. 16 in the NCBWA Division II Preseason Top 25 poll, climbed 10 spots to No. 6 in the first regular season poll released today. Pitt State is off to a 7-0 start to the season. The Gorillas have outscored their opposition, 106-12, through seven games played. Pitt State is batting .399 as a team and scoring 16.0 runs per game. The Gorillas sport a .987 fielding percentage and Pitt State pitcher currently have a 2.00 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 54.0 innings of work.
Pitt State will host Maryville University in a three-game series beginning Friday (Feb. 13) with a 1 p.m. contest at Al Ortolani Field.
