Three Gorillas Garner MIAA Track AOTW Week Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Three Pittsburg State University indoor track & field athletes -- two women and one man -- garnered MIAA Athlete of the Week honors Tuesday (Feb. 17). Redshirt freshman pole vaulter Breanne Peters claimed the weekly honor for women's field athletes and graduate hurdler Zyra Shivers received the award for women's track athletes. Redshirt sophomore thrower Drake Staplenton was tabbed the winner for men's field athletes.

Peters recorded the third-best mark in NCAA Division II this season with her clearance of 13 feet, 10.5 inches in the pole vault at the 11th Annual Russ Jewett Gorilla Indoor Classic Friday (Feb. 13). The Lindsborg, Kan., native posted a personal-best best effort in the discipline as well as the No. 3 mark all-time in Pitt State history.

Shivers clocked the No. 5 time in Division II this season in winning the 60-meter hurdles at the Gorilla Indoor Classic Saturday (Feb. 14). The Charlotte, N.C., native turned in a fast time of 8.37 seconds in the discipline. Her time ranks sixth all-time at Pitt State.

Stapleton (Caney, Kan.) recorded a pair of personal best throws in the shot put and the weight throw over the weekend. He posted a best mark of 59 feet, 6.75 inches in the shot put and 65-8.25 in the weight throw. Stapleton's shot put mark ranks No. 9 in NCAA Division II this season (and fourth all-time at Pitt State), while his weight throw mark ranks No. 14 (sixth at Pitt State).
