Three Gorillas Earn MIAA Athlete of the Week Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Three Pittsburg State University indoor track & field athletes – two women and one man – have earned MIAA Athlete of the Week honors Tuesday (Feb. 3).

For the women, redshirt senior Isabelle Peters garnered Field Athlete of the Week and redshirt senior Blakelee Winn secured Field Athlete of the Week. Junior sprinter Ilias Garcia received Men's Track Athlete of the Week accolades.

Peters improved her No. 2 mark in NCAA Division II this season with her winning performance in the pole vault at the PSU Invitational Saturday (Jan. 31) at the Robert W. Plaster Center. The Lindsborg, Kan., native won the competition with a season-best clearance of 13 feet, 11.25 inches.

Winn set a new Pitt State record and posted the No. 5 mark in NCAA Division II this season in winning the long jump. The Pea Ridge, Ark. native recorded a best jump of 20 feet, 2.5 inches in the discipline. Additionally, Winn clocked a season-best time of 8.50 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles in the meet, ranking No. 10 nationally in that event as well.

Garcia clocked the fastest time in D2 this season in winning the 60 meters Saturday. The Las Vegas, Nev. native posted a fast time of 6.63 seconds in the discipline. Garcia also registered the second-fastest time in Pitt State history with his performance.
