Gorillas to Send Split Squads to Nebraska, Arkansas

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams will send split squads to the Frank Sevigne Husker Classic and the Woo Pig Classic this weekend.
The Gorillas will send multi-event athletes and pole vaulters to Lincoln, Neb., for the two-day Sevigne Classic Friday and Saturday (Feb. 6-7), while the remainder of the squads will head to Fayetteville, Ark., Saturday for the Woo Pig Classic.

The Pitt State women maintained their No. 1 ranking in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Track & Field Rating Index (TFRI), while the Pitt State men held firm at No. 2 for a second week. Peters (Lindsborg, Kan.) clearned 13 feet, 11.25 inches in the pole vault, boosting her status as the No. 2 ranked vaulter in Division II this season. Winn set a new Pitt State record in the long jump (20-2.5) and clocked a season-best time of 8.50 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.

For the women, vaulter Isabelle Peters and multi-event athlete Blakelee Winn both garnered MIAA Athlete of the Week honors Tuesday (Feb. 3) for their performances in the PSU Invitational last Saturday (Jan. 31).

The Pitt State women currently have 16 national 10 marks:  Isabelle Peters (2nd, pole vault, 13-11.25); Rachel Wilson (2nd, high jump, 5-10.5); Kayvon Nubine (3rd, 60m hurdles, 8.38), Blakelee Winn (3rd, pentathlon, 3889 pts; 5th, long jump, 20-2.5; 10th, 60m hurdles, 8.50); Paige Mullen (4th, 5000m, 16:09.40; 10th, 3000m, 9:35.76); 4x400m relay (4th, 3:44.72); Breanne Peters (6th, pole vault, 13-5.75); Bethany Umbarger (7th, high jump, 5-8.5); Lily Brown (8th, triple jump, 40-3.5; 8th, pentathlon, 3708 pts); Quincey Turner (8th, pole vault, 13-1.75); Zyra Shivers (10th, 60m hurdles, 8.50); Jazmine Williamson (10th, triple jump, 40-3.25).

Ilias Garcia received MIAA Athlete of the Week honors for the Pitt State men after posting the fastest time in Division II this season in the 60 meters Saturday.
