NEW ORLEANS -- Pittsburg State University redshirt freshman sprinter
Griouard Weddington has been selected the NCAA Division II Athlete of the Week for men's indoor track & field Monday (Mar. 2).
In what may have been the fastest NCAA DII 60 meter meet ever, Weddington made his mark.
Clocking 6.54 in the prelims, the Grandview Mo., native tied the NCAA DII record held by Jason Smoots of N.C. Central (2003) and James Dadzie of West Texas A&M (2022). The time ranks No. 12 across all divisions this season — fast enough to secure a spot at the NCAA Division I Championships. On his heels were teammate Ilias Garcia, and Northwest Missouri's Dominic Sedlacek. The two men posted 6.59a and 6.61a in their own right, placing them as the No. 9 and No. 12 all-time NCAA DII performers.Â
Just hours later, Wedddington channeled the breakout performance into a win in the 200 meters, flying through the line in 21.04. The Gorillas would go on to claim their 10th MIAA indoor title in the last 13 years, beating the Bearcats, 225-115.Â
This is the fifth time that a male athlete from Pittsburg State has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week during the indoor season. Weddington joins Mason Strader, Hunter Jones, Cordell Tinch, and Garrett Appier on the elite list.Â
