Gorillas Complete First Day of Tommy Riggs Collegiate Invitational

PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University men's golf team completed the first day of the Tommy Riggs Collegiate Invitational on Monday (Mar. 30) at the Crestwood Country Club.

The Tommy Riggs Collegiate Invitational, named in honor of former PSU Associate Athletic Director Tommy Riggs who died unexpectedly at age 32 in July 2007, will serve as an MIAA point event in the 2025-26 schedule. Riggs, an invaluable member of the support staff at his alma mater for 10 years, was posthumously inducted into the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame in the Class of 2010.

Pitt State suspended the men's golf program following the 2013-14 season. The program returned to campus following a 10-year hiatus in 2024-25. Monday's meet will be the first home competition for the Gorillas since Sept. 10-11, 2012 when the squad hosted the Pittsburg State Invitational.

Among the 18 teams competing this week in Pittsburg, the Gorillas "A" are in fifth after the first day at +37 (+24/+13) as the "B" team sits in 16th at +59 (+27/32). Keaton Thissen at +6 (+4/+2) leads the "A" team and paces all participating members for Pitt State in 7th individually. Jack Randall at +10 (+9/+1) in 24th, Mason White and Tyler Hardtarfer at +12 (+7/+5) are tied for 37th and Cooper Forth at +19 (+6/+13) rounds out the "A" team in 75th.

Bradin Stahl leads the "B" team at +8 (+1/+7) and is 16th heading into the second day of action. Nick Van Wyngarden at +12 (+5/+7) is 37th, David Hobert at +17 (+9/+8) and Owen Buerke at +17 (+8/+9) are tied for 68th, Brady Bains at +20 (+9/+11) is 79th, Theo Juhl at +21 (+13/+8) sits in 82nd and Brooks Sauder at +28 (+16/+12) rounds out the squad in 96th.

Leading the team standings going into the final 18 holes of action are the No. 7 University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos at +21 (+9/+12) with a trio of individuals in the top 15. Rhett Hughes from UCO is the leading individual after 36 holes at +2 (+1/+1) with a tournament high of eight birdies.

Tuesday (Mar. 31) will be the final day of the Tommy Riggs Collegiate Invitational at the Crestwood Country Club with an 8:30 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start scheduled.
