PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University men's golf team wrapped up the second day of competition of the Tommy Riggs Collegiate Invitational hosted out at the Crestwood Country Club on Tuesday (Mar. 31). As a team the Gorillas finished in fifth at the MIAA point event, with Central Oklahoma, Washburn, Central Missouri and Winona State finishing ahead of the hosts in the team standings.Â
The Tommy Riggs Collegiate Invitational, named in honor of former PSU Associate Athletic Director Tommy Riggs who died unexpectedly at age 32 in July 2007, will serve as an MIAA point event in the 2025-26 schedule. Riggs, an invaluable member of the support staff at his alma mater for 10 years, was posthumously inducted into the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame in the Class of 2010.
Pitt State suspended the men's golf program following the 2013-14 season. The program returned to campus following a 10-year hiatus in 2024-25. Monday's meet will be the first home competition for the Gorillas since Sept. 10-11, 2012 when the squad hosted the Pittsburg State Invitational.
Among the 18 team tournament the Gorillas ended the two-day, three-round tournament at +51 (+24/+13/+14).
Keaton Thissen led all competitors for Pitt State with a 10th place finish at +10,
Mason White and
Jack Randall +14 finished tied for 22nd followed by
Tyler Hardtarfer in 34th (+16) and
Cooper Forth in 75th (+27) to round out the "A" squad.
The Pittsbug State "B" team finished in 16th at +87 (+27/+32/+28) with seven competitors comprising of the team.
Bradin Stahl led the second group with a 22nd place finish at +14,
David Hobart and
Nick Van Wyngarden (+21) tied for 53rd,
Brady Bains (+28) finished in 79th,
Theo Juhl (+31) came in 87th,
Owen Buerke (+34) was 91st and
Brooks Sauder (+41) finished in 95th.
Central Oklahoma claimed the team title at +26 (+9/+12/+5) with four members of the team finishing in the top 15. Peyton Coohran from Winona State claimed the individual title at +3 (E/+4/-1).
Up next for the Gorillas will be the MIAA Championship in Jefferson City, Mo., at the Jefferson City Country Club (Apr. 12-15).
