Pitt State Track & Field Teams Sweep MIAA Titles


ST. CHARLES, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University men's and women's track & field team swept the team titles at the 2015 MIAA Outdoor Championships Sunday (May 3).

The Pitt State men captured their fourth straight MIAA outdoor championship and their 11th MIAA outdoor title since joining the league in 1990. The Gorilla women earned their first MIAA outdoor title since 2004 and the program's eighth all-time MIAA outdoor crown.

The Pitt State women overcame a 7.5-point deficit from Saturday to pull away for a 12.5-point win over second-place Central Missouri, the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor National Champion. The Gorillas finished with 176.5 points, while the Jennies finished with 164 and third-place Lincoln compiled 133 points.

The Pitt State men also battled back from a seven-point deficit Saturday to claim a 12-point win over second place Missouri Southern. The Gorillas defeated the Lions 139 to 127. UCM finished third with 111 points.

The Pitt State men set the tone early Sunday with the men's 400m relay team of Andre Sanders, Jason Crow, Slade Nordic and Bryce Starks racing to victory in 40.51 seconds.

Jordan Morton added a second-place finish in the javelin, with a personal-best throw of 204 feet, 11 inches.

Garrett Appier repeated as MIAA champion in the shot put with a winning throw of 58-10, while Bo Farrow (53-3.75) and Luke Wilson (51-10) added fourth and sixth-place finishes in the discipline.

On the track, Talon Thompson raced to an MIAA runner-up finish in the steeplechase (9:26.47). Alex Conn added a third-place showing in the 1,500 meters (3:56.08), while Alexander Burson followed closely behind for fourth place in 3:58.30.

Justice Burks added a third-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (14.42), while Andre Sanders placed sixth in the event in 14.89. Crow (10.47) and Starks (10.52) finished second and third in the 100 meters, and Crow added a fourth-place showing in the 200 meters (21.28).

Marquel Nickens added an MIAA runner-up finish in the 400 meter hurdles (52.32).

On Saturday, Farrow finished as the MIAA runner-up in the discus (176-11), Wilson claimed an MIAA runner-up finish in the hammer throw (191-5), while Jeff Piepenbrink also placed second in the pole vault (16-11.5). Tanner McNutt (7,013 points) and Piepenbrink (6,957 points) also finished second and third, respectively, in the decathlon.

The Pitt State women also jumped out to a fast start Sunday and never looked back. The 400m relay team of Courtney Nelson, Ramie Grayson, Kelsey Lewis and Antqunita Reed scored an MIAA runner-up finish with a time of 46.85.

Jasmine Smith (47-4.25) and Cassie Caswell (47-1.5) added a second / third place showing in the shot put, while Reed finished second in the triple jump (41-11.5). Amira Jenkins (39-11.5), Conner Schultz (39-2.5) and Kezia Martin (38-9.75) added sixth through eighth place finishes in the discipline.

Reed added a third-place finish in the 100 meters (11.86) while Grayson finished fifth in the race in 12.04.

Emilyn Dearman claimed an MIAA title in the 400 meter hurdles in 59.62 and Jessica Macy followed with an MIAA title effort in the 5,000 meters (17:32.79).

Hannah DeVries also finished fourth in the 5,000m (18:30.97), while Reed added a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters (24.36) to individually compile 28 points. She narrowly missed repeating as the MIAA high point scorer as UCM's Erika Kinsey and Heavin Warner each finished with 30 points.

On Saturday, Smith (153-4) and Caswell (148-3) placed second and third in the discus. Reed finished as the MIAA runner-up in the long jump (19-10.25), Macy raced to an MIAA runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters (36:00.42) and Heather Glenn garnered All-MIAA honors with a third-place finish in the pole vault (12-5.25). Dearman also placed third in the women's heptathlon (5,063 points).
