Reed Steals Home, Gorillas Steal 10-9 Win From Lopers

PITTSBURG — No one asked for time and no one covered home plate following a botched out at first base on pinch hitter Logan Terrell's sacrifice so speedy Dallas Reed raced around the bases from first and scored on the play to give the Pittsburg State University baseball team a 10-9 win over the University of Nebraska-Kearney Saturday (Apr. 15) and the series sweep.

Reed started off the bottom of the 10th inning by being hit by pitch by UNK reliever Weston Glienke (3-1). After failing to execute a bunt in the bottom of the ninth and failing to advance a leadoff hitter in that frame, the Gorillas (17-22, 11-14 MIAA) turned to Terrell to get Reed into scoring position.

Instead, the got the win when Lopers third baseman Josh Estrada fielded Terrell's bunt but double-clutched the ball before throwing it in the dirt in front of first baseman Ricky Trammell. By the time the ball got to Trammell, Reed had rounded second base. Trammell retrieved the ball but held it in his glove while walking slowly toward Glienke. Catcher Billy Hayes had vacated his spot behind the plate on the play and Reed alertly raced home with the winning run.

The Gorillas rallied from an early 7-1 deficit against UNK (13-26, 6-20 MIAA) thanks to a two-run third inning and a six-run fifth. Pinch hitter Cole Brecheisen delivered a two-out, two-run single and pinch hitter Brock Zanca followed with a run-scoring hit before Reed capped the inning with a two-run blast to left field to secure a 9-8 lead.

Cooper Gardner (6-1) worked the final 2 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win. He allowed no hits and struck out three UNK batters.

Colton Pogue went 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer and three runs scored. Andrew Vogelbaugh also doubled, homered and scored twice.

Pitt State, which has strung together five straight wins, will return to action Tuesday (Apr. 18) at 6 p.m. at Al Ortolani Field against Missouri Southern.
