Gorillas Sweep Pair From Tigers Monday

HAYS, Kan. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team swept a pair of games from Fort Hays State University Monday (May 1). The Gorillas defeated the Tigers, 8-5 and 8-6, in a doubleheader at Larks Park.

Pitt State (22-24, 16-16 MIAA) and Fort Hays State (10-35, 3-29 MIAA) will wrap up the three-game series with a 3 p.m. game Tuesday.

In game one, Cody Whiting (4-5) limited FHSU to a pair of unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings of work. The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead, but Whiting settled in and scattered five hits while fanning 10 batters.

The Gorillas utilized a five-run fifth inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead.

Chase Kilgore, Colton Pogue and Hunter Clanin all drove in two runs as Pitt State collected 14 hits in the contest.

In the nightcap, the Gorillas capitalized on a three-run eighth inning to rally from a 6-5 deficit and take an 8-6 lead.

Brett Macary led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Andrew Vogelbaugh and Ethan Schlesener scored two runs apiece.

Ty Rowe (5-0) struck out six FHSU batters while allowing only one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings of relief work to pick up the win. Starter Dante Richardson was perfect through four innings before running into trouble during a three-run fifth inning. He allowed four hits and two walks in the frame.
