VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — For the second time in program history, Pittsburg State University has captured the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship.
In dominating fashion, the Gorillas swept through the competition at the Virginia Beach Sport Center. Pitt State compiled 86 points to win the national championship by 44 points over second place Adams State (42). Grand Valley State finished third with 29 points.
The Gorillas secured four individual event national championships on the day – five total in the two-day meet.
Sophomore Cordell Tinch swept a pair of national crowns Saturday, winning the 60-meter hurdles in a new meet record time of 7.51 seconds and winning the high jump with a clearance of 7 feet, 1.25 inches. Sophomore Treyvon Ferguson won the national title in the triple jump with a best mark of 52-1.25; and the 4x400m relay of Sam Tudor, Bailey Stone, Corey Lyons and Braylen Brewer punctuated the meet with a national crown by winning their race in 3:09.63.
Sophomore Daylin Williams claimed a national runner-up finish in the 60m hurdles (7.71), while Brewer added a national runner-up finish in the 400 meters (47.09). Sophomore A.J. Evans shattered the Pitt State record with his fourth place All-America finish in the 200 meters (20.90). Evans also placed third overall in the 60 meters in 6.68.
Lyons earned All-America honors with a sixth-place showing in the 400m (47.56) and Xavier Carmichael added a sixth-place All-America finish in the 60m (6.72). T.J. Caldwell rounded out the Pitt State point scoring with a seventh-place All-America finish in the 60m hurdles (8.00).
The Gorillas followed up their 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championship with the 2023 indoor title. Pitt State claimed its first-ever indoor national crown in 2018 at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg.
The Gorillas placed third overall at the 2022 NCAA-II Indoor National Championships and fifth nationally in 2021.
