Tinch Qualifies for Team USA in 110m Hurdles

EUGENE, Ore. — Pittsburg State University sophomore Cordell Tinch continued his electrifying run on the 2023 outdoor track & field season with a silver medal performances in the men's 110-meter hurdles at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships Sunday (July 9) at historic Hayward Field. Tinch, who clocked a world leading time of 12.96 seconds in the discipline in June, qualified for Team USA with his second-place finish in the finals of the 110mH Sunday. The Green Bay, Wis., native crossed the finish line in 13.08 seconds. Two-time defending U.S. champion Daniel Roberts edged Tinch by .03, claiming the American title in 13.05. Roberts, Tinch, third-place finisher Freddie Crittenden (13.23) and Grant Holloway, the 2020 Tokoya Olympic silver medalist, will now represent Team USA at the World Track & Field Championships in Hungary in August. Holloway qualified to the finals of the 110mH Sunday evening but elected not to race due to his automatic qualification to the World Games. Tinch (Green Bay, Wis.) became the first athlete in D2 history to record three individual event national titles at the same championship when he won the 110mH (12.87, +6.0w), long jump (8.16m, 26-9.25) and high jump (2.21, 7-3) May 26-27 at the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships at Pueblo, Colo. Tinch joined the Pitt State track & field program in January after last competing collegiately at the University of Kansas in 2019. He garnered the Big 12 championship in the 110m hurdles that year. This winter, Tinch captured national championships in the 60-meter hurdles (7.51) and the high jump (2.18m, 7-1.75) while helping the Gorillas capture the 2023 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championship. His 30-point outburst at Pueblo, Colo., in May helped Pitt State to its second straight outdoor national title as well. Tinch plans to forego his junior season next year to pursue a professional career after recently signing with a management group.
