The Streak Continues: Gorillas Outgun the Field Again

Gorillas Capture Fourth Straight Indoor National Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Pittsburg State University men's track & field team claimed its fourth straight NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship in dominant fashion yet again Saturday (Mar. 14) at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

The Gorillas shot into the lead in the team standings early in the day Saturday and rode that momentum to victory.

Pitt State compiled 75.5 points to claim the program's fifth overall NCAA Indoor National Championship (2018, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026). Grand Valley State University finished as the national runner-up with 51.5 points and Wingate University placed third with 50 points.

With the title, the Gorillas have won the last eight D2 track & field championships. After placing third at the 2022 NCAA-II Indoor Nationals, Pitt State claimed the 2022 Outdoor Nationals crown and swept both indoor and outdoor honors in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The Gorillas claimed the program's first indoor national crown in 2018 at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg.

Pitt State also becomes the first D2 program to record four consecutive indoor national championships since St. Augustine's College did so between 2006 and 2009.

On Championship Saturday, the Gorillas secured two indivdual event national titles to help fuel the point-scoring frenzy:  Ilias Garcia in the 60 meters (6.58) and Dylan Sprecker in the mile run (4:11.92). Pitt State also got a national runner-up effort early in the day from Tyrone Jackson in the 60-meter hurdles (7.79); and the 4x400m relay of Amar Williams, Logan Davis, Caden Williams and Nate Watson closed out the Championships with a national runner-up showing (3:07.28).

Sprecker initially secured a national runner-up finish in the mile, but Adams State's Housem Hrabi was disqualified from the event after crossing the finish line first in 4:11.55.

Leo Chauchard and Drew Wilhite started the day early with fourth and fifth-place All-America performances in the heptathlon. Chauchard compiled 5,452 points and Wilhite totaled 5,351 point in the multi events.

Na'Koriyon James garnered a seventh-place All-America effort in the 60-meter hurdles (7.93) and Johnetheon Lockhart added a seventh-place All-America performance in the triple jump (49-9.75). Xavier Byers secured a fifth-place All-America showing in the high jump (6-11).

Caden Williams also breezed to a third-place All-America showing in the 400 meters in 46.21 and Braylon Thompson registered a sixth-place All-America effort of 21.11 in the 200 meters.

Pitt State has finished in the top five teams at the NCAA-II Indoor National Championships in seven of the last eight seasons (2018, Champs; 2021, 5th; 2022, 3rd; 2023, Champs; 2024, Champs; 2025, Champs; 2026, Champs) - the 2020 national meet was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Pitt State women also captured the 2026 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championship, marking the second straight year the Gorillas swept both men's and women's indoor track & field titles. The last school to accomplish that feat was St. Augustine's College in 2007.
