Gorillas Cruise to Sixth Straight MIAA Crown

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's outdoor track & field team continued its dominance over its MIAA competition at the 2026 MIAA Outdoor Championships Sunday (May 3) at the Russ Jewett Outdoor Track & Field Complex.

The Gorillas claimed their sixth straight MIAA Outdoor Championship and the program's 11th MIAA outdoor title in the last 15 seasons by compiling 203.25 points in the three-day meet. Missouri Southern State University finished as a distant MIAA runner-up with 127.75 points, 75.5 points behind Pitt State.

The Gorillas claimed six MIAA titles on Sunday, including a MIAA meet record performance by the the 4x400m relay of Woyn Chatman, Nate Watson, Logan Davis and Caden Williams in the final event of the competition. The quartet shot to the top of the NCAA Division II leader board this season with a fast time of 3 minutes, 4:56 seconds.

Additionally, Grayson Smith (pole vault, 17-3.5), the 4x100m relay (39.61), Dylan Sprecker (1,500m, 3:52.16) and Braylon Thompson (100m, 10.30; 200m, 20.43) all secured MIAA titles.

Six Gorillas garnered MIAA runner-up performances:  Drake Stapleton in the shot put (60-10), Britton Gage in the pole vault (16-11.5), Antwan Dawson in the triple jump (50-3.25), Tyrone Jackson in the 110m hurdles (13.80), Davis in the 400m (45.85), Eli Gilmore in the 800 meters (1:50.49) and Sprecker in the 5,000m (14:33.45).

Na'Koriyon James (14.06) and Albert House (14.26) finished third and fifth in the 110m hurdles, while Chatman (46.05), Watson (46.78) and Amar Williams (46.90) placed fourth, sixth and seventh in the 400m. Trace Hanchett (4th, 218-7), Maddox Johnson (6th, 213-8) and Gannon Marquardt (7th, 213-6) all placed in the javelin throw. Xavier Carmichael (100m, 10.61) and Caden Uthe (800m, 1:51.75) each logged sixth-place finishes. Johnetheon Lockett placed seventh in the triple jump (47-11.5) and Braylon Brown tied for eighth-place in the pole vault (15-7.75).

Thompson claimed the MIAA High Point Scorer Award for his individual titles in the 100m and the 200m and for helping the 4x100m to victory. He compiled 22.5 points in the meet.
